In view of the mileage demand, there is good news in the industry, such as Ganfeng Lithium, Weilan Xinneng, Ningde Times, Funeng Technology, Qingtao Energy, Huineng Technology and other companies, after precipitation and verification in 2022, some companies' semi-solid state batteries are expected to enter a new stage of mass production in 2023. What is more concerned by the market and investors is that Whether semi-solid state battery can be a new solution to meet the market demand.


Semi-solid batteries will be available in 2023


At present, the mainstream power battery solutions mainly include three-way lithium battery and lithium iron phosphate battery. The former has a slightly higher energy density and the latter has higher safety. However, their common shortcoming is that neither of them can meet the demand for long endurance.


Among them, semi-solid battery is expected to be one of the better options at present.


In January 2022, the first 50 units of Dongfeng E70 were released globally and began demonstration operation. The semi-solid state batteries are provided by Ganfeng Lithium. However, this batch of cars is not a mass production vehicle, but a small batch delivery validation, to provide more solid operational data for subsequent mass production.


On the evening of December 15, 2022, Dongfeng Lantu brand officially released Light Chaser, of which the 82kW · h version uses semi-solid battery pack (580km in CLTC condition). The first batch of new cars has been mass-produced on January 13, 2023, and will be delivered in the first half of this year. And the car is also known as the world's first mass production of semi-solid battery models. However, Dongfeng Lantu does not disclose its semi-solid battery supplier. Some analysts say that, along with Dongfeng E70, Lantu Lithium uses Ganfeng Lithium products, but Funeng Technology recently hinted that "the power battery carried by Lantu Lithium uses three yuan soft bag products supplied by the company" and "the company has already mass-produced semi-solid products and loaded them".


In fact, the model expected to debut semi-solid battery is Nio's ET7, which was originally scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2022, but the plan has been delayed. The latest news shows that the delivery of the 150KWh semi-solid battery version of Nio ET7 has been delayed to the first half of 2023, and the supplier is Weilan New Energy. Guoxuan Gaoke may also be one of the supporting manufacturers.


It should be noted that the first semi-solid cell of Weilan New Energy has been successfully rolled off the production line in Huzhou base on November 2, 2022, with an energy density of 360Wh/kg. It is expected to start supporting delivery of Nio ET7 in the first quarter of 2023.


The Guoxen semi-solid state battery is equipped with HiPhi X, which has a battery pack energy density of 260Wh/kg, a capacity of 160kWh and a driving range of 1000km. It will be delivered in the first quarter of 2023.


Other lithium suppliers are also speeding up the introduction of semi-solid batteries. At present, Ningde Times has the largest installed power battery in the world, and its products also plan to support SERES 5 new energy strategic model. It is understood that this car is the first new energy vehicle released overseas by Chinese auto enterprises in 2023, and the 90kWh version uses Ningde Times semi-solid battery. With a maximum range (WLTP) of 530km, deliveries are expected to begin in March 2023.


In addition, Qingtao Energy products will also be carried in NezhU, with a cooperative model with SAIC expected to be launched in 2023. Funeng Technology also realized the sample delivery to Daimler; Beiqi also plans to choose Qingtao energy, Weilan new energy products; Guangqi An Lithium forms a strong association with Ganfeng Lithium; Geely, also unwilling to be outdone, has set up a solid state battery R&D team with Weilan New Energy; Changan, Red Flag, Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen and other domestic and foreign Oems have also increased the solid state battery product line layout.


It is difficult to change the current lithium supply system in the short term


With its higher energy density, safety and wide temperature range, semi-solid battery has been promoted and selected by many lithium battery enterprises and main engine factories, and relevant models will be launched one after another this year.


However, the author also found that BYD, Ningde Times and other leading enterprises are not "very concerned" about the semi-solid state battery route. Although Ningde Times has a layout, semi-solid state battery has not been the focus of promoting. On the contrary, Kirin battery with relatively low energy density is its next fist product. Mass production will be achieved in the first quarter of 2023, and a new round of cooperation with the main engine factory has been intensified. Polkrypton 009 pure electric MPV and 2023 polkrypton 001 are the first models.


Byd also has a semi-solid battery technology route, but its current focus is on lithium iron phosphate blade battery solution, BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu has repeatedly publicly expressed adherence to the lithium iron phosphate blade battery route. Byd also recently denied market rumors that its solid-state battery was about to be tested in cars.


Analyst Chen Lei said," The significant advantage of semi-solid battery is that it improves the energy density of lithium battery. Each unit can achieve 360Wh/kg, which is higher than the 180Wh/kg of BYD blade battery, 255Wh/kg of Ningde Times Kirin battery and 300Wh/kg of 4680 battery, but the gap is not particularly obvious with Kirin battery. "However, the cost is much higher than that of the existing battery system. It is believed that the semi-solid battery will not change the existing lithium supply system and will only be suitable for some high-end models."


Importantly, semi-solid battery product forms and the existing lithium battery system, except for electrolyte, have no intrinsic innovation, will not play a role in promoting higher energy density all-solid-state batteries, Ouyang Minggao, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, previously said. Solid-state battery will be the most important technology. In the future, China's power battery innovation will gradually develop from battery structure innovation to material system innovation. This process is more complicated and requires more time accumulation, which is also the commanding point of global power battery innovation."


Based on this, Ningde Times is not optimistic about the long-term development prospects of the semi-solid state technology route. A summary shows that its internal experts believe that semi-solid state batteries tend to speculative solutions, Ningde Times is more optimistic about the high-nickel route based on structural innovation, and the next generation of products is focused on the research and development of all-solid state battery technology.


Byd holds the same idea. It continues to increase structural innovation of blade batteries, does not bet on semi-solid state battery route, but has been quietly reserving all-solid state battery technology. According to analysis, BYD's number of solid-state battery patents ranks first in China.


Data show that all solid state battery has more stable electrolyte mechanical and chemical characteristics, static and cycle life greatly improved; The discharge power can be maintained in a wide temperature range of -50 ℃ to 200 ℃, which can greatly alleviate the problem of battery capacity attenuation in winter; The energy density has been greatly increased, reaching 2-10 times that of current three-way lithium batteries. But solid-state batteries, which have different anode materials and electrolytes than liquid lithium, need to reshape the supply chain, improve the efficiency of the quick charge, and lower costs to get to market, a goal that Ouyang described as "extremely difficult and long".


In addition to local companies, foreign companies are already focusing on the all-solid-state battery technology line. It is known that international companies, including Samsung SDI, Solid Power, Quantum Scape, TDK, IMEC, are accelerating the technological advancement of all-solid-state power batteries, and most of them plan to achieve mass production of products by 2025. China's progress is relatively slow. Chen Lei believes that mass production is more likely after 2028, and only a few companies, such as Huineng, plan to reach the stage of all-solid-state battery mass production in 2024.


In terms of the main engine plant, Nissan plans to start production in 2024 and officially install all-solid-state batteries in 2028. Toyota also plans to launch solid-state battery models in 2025 and mass-produce them in 2030. Volkswagen plans to ship Quantum Scape's solid-state batteries by 2025.
